So, I was at my mom’s place and she asked me, “since you’re a total geek and an engineer too, can you tell me the best front load washer in my budget?” She asked me to classify washers into different categories, and things to consider while buying a washer, so this article is for my mom.

A washing machine is an appliance that washes and spins different clothes at different temperatures.

Types of washers:
There are two types of washing machines. The most sold is the front loading washer: Here the laundry is introduced into the machine through a door at the front. Compared to top loading washing machines, the front loading washers use less water. In top-loading washing machines, the drum is loaded from above. This type of washing can be used while standing, which is a relief for the back.So, which is the best front loading washing machine?

Cleaning performance:
The cleaning performance is indicated on the energy label by letters. Many modern washing machines have an A washing efficiency, i.e. have the best cleaning performance index. Washers identified with the letter G have the worst washing performance.

Most detergents are effective at a temperature of 40 degrees. Detergents popular today wash clothes at lower temperatures.

However, it’s recommended to wash clothes with hot water from time to time. The reason is that a temperature of 40 degrees Celsius is not enough to kill all bacteria, which can be recognized by a slight musty smell in the washing machine. But, the bacterium gets eliminated at a temperature of 60 degrees. This visibly improves towels, cloth diapers and other items that contain such organisms. At a temperature of 90 degrees, the effect is even greater.

If you’re suffering from diseases (such as flu and colds) or allergies, wash at 60 degrees whenever possible. This will eliminate pathogens and mites.

Spin efficiency:
The drier the clothes come out of the washer, the lesser time they will need in a dryer. In general, a high number of revolutions mean drier clothes. Another parameter is the drum diameter. With a larger drum, more number of revolutions is required to achieve optimum results. The spin cycle is indicated on the energy label with letters ranging from A (efficient) to G (inefficient). Furthermore, some machines show percentage residual moisture.

Power Consumption:
Like efficiency of washers, the power consumption is also indicated by letters, which are also included in the energy label. The energy label- A (very efficient) is the most common, while G is very inefficient. There are also washing machines that go beyond the letter A in the energy label. In such cases, they are labeled AAA machines.

The energy label is also used to indicate the electric power consumption per wash cycle at a temperature of 60 degrees. For the temperatures used most frequently, following are the things to consider:
Drum Capacity
The capacity of the drum determines the amount of laundry that can be introduced into the washer.  This usually ranges between five and eight kilos, but there are models that support even ten kilos.

Noise Level

This label also provides information on the noise level of the washing machine while it washes and spins.

Motor

There are two types of motors. One is the classic electric motor, powered by carbon brushes, two pulleys and a belt. The other type uses a brushless mechanism.

Since it’s made up of fewer parts, the latter is quieter and also suffers less wear and tear. These kinds of motors are also referred to as “Direct drive” (direct drive).

Electronics

Thanks to electronics, modern washing machines have a lot more features. Many devices automatically set water use and distribute the load to avoid imbalances.

Some machines have capability to judge if an additional cycle is needed, from the amount of foam.

Special Programs:

Many washing machines have special programs. The most common are:

• Short programs for washing clothes that are not too dirty.
• Programs for wool and delicate clothes.
•  Programs for other fabrics and garments

Additional Features:

Many modern washing machines have additional functions.

• The rinse stop function is one of them, and is gaining popularity fast.
• The remaining time indicated on the screen informs the user of when the program ends. The “Start Delay” allows the user to program the machine manually. You can even choose when to start the wash programmer. Some washers can even calculate when to start washing so that it can be completed by the specified time.
• In the case of breakdowns, the function “Aqua-stop” (water cut) allows to interrupt the water inlet to prevent the washer from spoiling.
• Hot water connection:
  Some models can connect directly to a hot water tap. Thus energy is saved by not making the use of electricity for heating water.However, unlike what happens with a dishwasher, it’s not easy to connect a washing machine to hot water. The reason is that the washing machines only have one entry for water, which is used for cold water. If you connect a washing machine to a hot water connection, the machine will not get cold water for rinsing. I have always wondered what the first European explorers to reach what is now the United States must have thought. Huge mountains, endless forests, clears rivers… everything was so different than Europe. The cold, tornadoes, hurricanes, were so different from Europe. The explorers must have been fascinated, rather overwhelmed by all this immensity. The size of the great lakes must have been shocking.

One the most beautiful of these water bodies is the small river that connects Erie in Ontario. The river, Niagara which covers 56 Kms and at one point becomes a breathtaking waterfall would be been brilliant for the explorers to watch.

We arrived on a rainy in Oberlin and it was brilliant out there. We were overwhelmed by the immense power and beauty of nature, the noise of water falling on rocks. It started raining without any warning, but we were happy at the sight.

Next day we walked to the US side (our side 🙂 ) and I couldn’t make it back to Canada with my friends because I forgot a paper! 😦 We enjoyed our stay in Canada, and honestly I can spend hours sitting and watching the beautiful rivers, mountains and waterfalls there. The emotions we feel in every situation and circumstance find a special place in our memory for that particular situation.

For example, if we go to a party where everyone is enjoying, food is delicious, music is great, the atmosphere is cheerful, but we feel sad, depressed and don’t want to participate, the party will be remembered as an unsatisfactory experience in our memory.

The memory is directly linked to how we live the situation. In other words, the situation is black and white, and we will put color based on the excitement we feel.

Knowledge of our memory is critical because it helps us understand what is happening around us and helps us to understand the reactions of people around us (of family, friends, etc.).

In a new situation, our brain uses memory to find similar situations to help us make decisions. Thus, the information is critical in memory, especially EMOTIONAL, since it helps to make a decision. We think we make decisions based on the moment but that isn’t true. Our emotions are of critical importance in making decisions.

What if you were re-invited to a party at the same place and with the same friends?
You will immediately recall the sadness and probably will not want to return, at least at the first instance.

Emotions matter a lot when making decisions, like in this case, although every element of the party is good, but since you have bad memories of it, you won’t like to relive those bad moments again.
